I'm not talking hifi fairy dust sound that only Hi Fi World reviewers can hear: a kid of 12 with his or her back turned would simply say that the M1DAC sounded "better" or "more real".Īnything that I have done wrong here or missed? I don't mean something that could be fixed by turning up the treble, but that high-end sound that you get with vocal sibilance or a cymbal. Music looses what I can best describe as the "brilliance" or "sparkle" that you get with really good gear. The Audiolab M-DAC is completely sub-par to the M1DAC. * Set the Mac volume to 0DB / max and used the M-DACs volume control * Set the Mac's Hz to 44.X so that the M-DAC could do any up-sampling (check) * Adjusted MIDI settings and even ponied up €10 for "Bit Perfect" software from App store - tested with and without (check) ![]() * All cables and connectors are good (check), tried USB and Optical (check) ![]() * On getting the M-DAC I pulled the latest and greatest John West firmware - West Lake - but only after testing it stock (check) Read this forum top to bottom and based on posts already tried the following: The sold stock with a crappy pre-amp that is by-passed and have improved valves. (2) two Shanling SP-80 monoblock valve power amplifiers. Have limited opportunity to demo much British hifi gear here in my part of the Netherlands. Have my surround from Audiolab so thought with the new chipset etc. Liked the all digital pre-amp and DAC story of M-DAC. Am a nube on Pink Fish Media, but saw a lot of M-DAC threads and know from research that this was popular with Musical Fidelity modders in the past (Rock Grotto etc).īought an M-Dac in order to replace my M1DAC as I'm currently using volume from my Mac, and it is hard to achieve low volumes.
